Federal Employee Program Preauthorization Requirements for Kidney Transplants

Audience: Surgeons, Nephrologists and Hospitals

Effective January 1, 2022, the Federal Employee Program (FEP) will require preauthorization for kidney transplants for all FEP plans. Kidney transplants will also become part of the Blue Distinction Centers for Transplants Program as of January 1.

The FEP Medical Policy 7.03.01 related to kidney transplants will be reactivated as of January 1. You can review the policy at   
FEP members may be eligible for travel and lodging benefits related to their kidney transplant if they meet eligibility criteria. 
Be sure to check member benefits and eligibility before providing or scheduling any service for FEP members.
