Clarification of Davis Vision Partnership for Standalone Vision Benefits

Audience: Vision Care Providers

We would like to provide clarification of our new partnership with Davis Vision, Inc., (“Davis Vision”). As we shared in our communication to you dated October 7, 2021, all claims and inquiries for members covered by our standalone vision benefit plans will be handled by Davis Vision. This applies only to the members of our groups that purchase one of our new standalone vision plans. This does not apply to members with vision coverage that is part of their medical plan.

Standalone vision is not a rider; it is a new product line that is separate from a member’s medical or dental plan. Groups that select one of the standalone vision products will pay separate premiums for that product. Excellus BlueCross BlueShield will continue handling claims and inquiries for vision services covered under a member’s medical plan.

Benefits and Eligibility

It is important that you check your patient’s member card and verify benefits and eligibility at each visit.  The standalone vision member card will prominently indicate “Vision Plan” (see a sample card on the reverse of this notice). We recommend checking with each member to determine if they have both a standalone plan and a medical plan. 

  • For members with standalone vision coverage, verify benefits and eligibility with Davis Vision.
  • For members with vision coverage through their medical plan, verify benefits and eligibility with Excellus BCBS at Provider.ExcellusBCBS.com.

Submitting Claims

For members with standalone vision coverage, claims are to be submitted to Davis Vision. Please do not submit claims for members with standalone vision coverage to Excellus BCBS.

  • If you are a participating provider in the Davis Vision provider network, follow their process for submitting claims to Davis Vision.
  • If you are not currently in the Davis Vision provider network, claims can be submitted to Davis Vision by the member through their online account or by mailing to the address on their member card. For information on joining the Davis Vision provider network, go to:    https://davisvision.com/eye-care-professionals/join/apply/.

For members with vision coverage through their medical plan, follow the existing process to submit claims to Excellus BCBS.
